Canadian Maple Burger

(NC)-These juicy burgers are classically Canadian and just right for serving a crowd - paired nicely with the uniquely Canadian Caesar. Celebrate all that is truly Canadian this summer!

1/3 cup (75 mL) dry bread crumbs

1/4 cup (50 mL) HP Sauce

1 egg, beaten

3/4 tsp (4 mL) each salt and pepper

2 tsp (10 mL) Lea & Perrins Worcestershire Sauce, divided

1 1/2 lb (750 g) lean ground beef

2 cups (500 mL) sliced sweet onion

3/4 cup (175 mL) Diana Sauce, Maple flavour, divided

6 thick slices peameal bacon

Sliced Cheddar cheese

Hamburger buns
1. Blend bread crumbs with HP Sauce, egg, salt, pepper and half of the Lea & Perrins Worcestershire Sauce; crumble in beef and mix gently. Form firmly into 6 equal patties. Chill for 30 minutes.

2. Meanwhile, preheat grill to medium; grease grate well. Arrange onions in the centre of a large sheet of heavy foil. Drizzle with remaining Lea & Perrins Worcestershire Sauce and 1/4 cup (50 mL) Diana Sauce. Fold and crimp foil edges to form a secure packet; grill for 20 minutes, turning often.

3. Add burgers and bacon to grill alongside the onion packet. Grill for 6 to 7 minutes. Turn meat and baste well with remaining Diana Sauce. Grill for an additional 4 to 6 minutes or until burgers are cooked through and bacon is browned. Top burgers with sliced Cheddar cheese, grilled onions and bacon; serve on buns. Makes 6 servings.

Health-it-up Twist: Add additional fiber by serving on whole-wheat rolls.

Tip: For perfectly cooked burgers an instant-read thermometer should register 160°F (71°C) when inserted, through the side, into the centre of the patty.
